Unit 5 Production Management Evaluation

Constraint experienced:

Legal

Legal rights are laws which have been but in place in the media industry to make both parties do not out law each other How my short film keeps to the legal requirements in the media industry, we made sure it does not contain any copyright music as this then would mean that we won't be able to upload to YouTube, the overall effect that the non-copyright music has on the short film is that it can be shared on different platform. The effect that this had gave on the short film was that we gave it music that had fitted the short film and it created the right atmosphere especially at 1:39 when we hear the lyrics matching the action as it speaks about drug, without the music it makes it very dual and it wouldn't get the audience in a mood which we wanted, the purpose of the short film was to make the audience smile and laugh, i think music played a big part in this.

Although we tried our best to keep with the legal issues, it was very difficult as when we were doing breaking performers rights as we did not take in waviers which can be used as a legal paper to confirm that they agree to act in the short film, which means it can be used later if there is a disagreement, this legal document can be used in court as proof if the actor disagrees. Another legal factor we broke was that we were harming under 18 as one of the character called 'jay' was smoking, this means harming their health, in the future we should try and look for character that are over the age of 18 because if they are under the age of 18 you are responsible in many different ways,

Regulatory

Regulatory is issues such do with classification, by this i mean that what age is the short film most suitable for, as you can see i think our short film is would be classified as a 15 above film, due to the following points, we have strong language such as swear words like ' fuck you' and 'piss off', these language are strong but it states that  'depending on the manner  in which it is used' this tells us that really depends which they way that they have said it, in our short film it is all comedy with the two friends and is not said in a serious tone, this is why it will be classed as an 15. However different people will have different opinion about what age they think it is classified as i believe that the film does touch upon 18 as the 18 requirement is that there is 'illegal drug use', in our short film we have two 17-18 year old who are acting in it and then we see them take drugs which is illegal this is why our short film i believe is 15/18 as there are content from both it contained but more aimed towards the 15 rated as there are more guidelines which it meets.

Financial

Financially we didn't really have a budget we could spend, we had to improvise a lot of thing due to no big funding as we would need to pay our set as the location was near by and it was a public area which meant us not needing to pay when filming, also by the location being near meant no travel cost as the buses are free for us. This benefited as we could spend our money elsewhere for props. By having no financial funding allowed us to think a lot better as we used most elements which we already owned.

An area that I thought that we had overspent was the essential to make it look like the actors were rolling up a joint, overall it cost us around £15 including the tobacco and weed which we had in our short film, this was very expected but was essential in our short film as we needed to have it, in the future we will try to get funding, how finance had a effected on the short film was that we couldn't dream big as there was a limit due to the fact that we had no budget, this is why we always thought how much it would cost and props already which we already own, for example the mobile phone shown in the short film was ours which we had used this meant us not paying for this saved us a lot of money. Finance has a big impact, for not having a budget i believe that we did well as the short film has been executed well as it shows the lifestyle of the young teenagers.

Management:

Time Management

Time management for this project was overall very productive as we were working any possible time we had.  When we started the pre-production work we were really behind as we i was ill for most of the time but we got the work done as i worked from home, by doing this we managed to stay back on time. During production are time manage was perfect as we all were at the right place at the right time, this allowed us to record the whole of our short film in the time which we wanted to this meant us being able to edit when we needed to, this means us having enough to re-shoot any scenes or shots which we thought were not good enough.
Improvements regarding time management would be to make sure that while filming to make sure the shots that are recorded are the way which we wanted, although this is time consuming it is very beneficial as it will lead to you not wasting time when it comes to editing and then you find out that the footage cannot be used, this is why i believe checking footage while in production can save you time and this is what we learnt as a group. Also time management is a key factor to do with communication and leadership as these factors help you to be more efficient with time, this means having effective timings.

Leadership Skills

Leadership in this project was a very big factor  that was lead during this project was very important doesn't matter how small the groups are, what we thought was that the director had to play a big part in the leadership, as they had the vision in the head this meant them needing to explain how they want it and what each individual character should do. Me being the camera operator and editor it was very important that i had the right shot and to make sure that the characters were in frame or i would tell them where to go, so i can improve the shot, this is a form of leadership as you would be directing people where to go. Also when editing the director would take the lead as they would explain how they want the shot and the pace of editing, these instruction must be followed by the editor.

At the post production stage the leadership should the most as when i was editing the short film i liked the fact that the director took a lead and i could confirm changes or even if i had doubt about a shot from the script, when editing the director always took my opinion on board and this helped us create a final product which we both could submit. Leadership has had a big effect on our short film due to the fact that leadership means that people know what there meant be doing, A factor which we may improve would be the fact that not wasting time and arguing about a choice we should just try it out then make a decision.

Communication

Communication is the way which you stayed up to dated with your partner and actors. For us we mostly communicated to our actors via mobile phones as that was that quickest way we could find out if they had any issues or even ask if there avaliable as a pair we more spoke in person as we would see each other everyday, this helped us get more on the same page because if one of us didn't get something we could explain in more depth. When it came to the production days me and my partner made sure that we had a mobile number for the actors so we can contact, we did have a change of location but luckily we had the phone number so we could call them and let them know, both of our actors replied back and listened to are instruction. Phsyical communication was a lot better for us as we could explain in more detail if not sure and the actors communicated well as they would let us know straight away if the couldn't make it and then this will allow us to plan in advance or find an alternative. Overall i believe in my group there was no communication issues as a pair we made sure us and everyone was informed of any changes , this allowed us to create a high final product.

Meeting Requirements

Fitness for purpose client is whether the final product has turned out the way which the client wanted. We were set a brief which we had to follow the client mentioned that it will be entered for a competition at ' SCREENTEST 2018', this means that there being guidelines such as to make sure that we use copyright free music, this was very difficult as we needed to find the right music and also make sure it is copyright free, for example at 1:17 we have music, we had to ask permission before using it and this allowed us to make sure that it is copyright free. Another guideline from the client was that it had to be 5-10 mins long, our short film 5:08 , we just went over the minimum time this mean us meeting the fitness for purpose of the the client. Overall this shows us meeting the brief which means meeting the client expectation.

Achieving Agreed Outcome

Realisation of the proposal is how well we meet the brief and did we achieve to the best standard possible. When we begun we had to have pitch our idea to the client to see if our idea meet their expectation and the brief we also gained feedback about the idea and what we could improve. In the brief it mentioned that 'your submission must be clearly classifiable into a film genre' this means that the short film needs to show a clear genre which means that they can understand the genre from watching it. When pitching we clearly said that it would be a comedy genre, i believe we clearly portrayed that in our short film, for example at 0:58 when we see the character getting a tampon out of the pocket it makes the audience laugh as it is a unusual item for the men to carry, this is why it would be more humorous for the male gender audience. Overall this shows us meeting the brief as the genre is clearly conveyed in the whole of the short film.

Working to Agreed Timescales

Working to agreed timescale was achieved by our group as we always hit our target but at the end of the editing we faced a issues with the shots which we needed to re-film, this was very time consuming and left us to be editing for another week so instead of finishing on the 16th of June we finished by on the 23rd, by having this extra it did mean we didn't achieve it in the time scale, however i think a big factor was due to me and my partner having vital A-level exams which meant us needing to put our focus elsewhere at times. The extra week allowed us to agree the timescales with my partner this allowed us to have set time to come and edit.

Improvement to working to agreed timescale would be that during production we had a lot of times when the actors delayed the time due to them having unexpected duties, this meant are agreed timescales differing at times. Also during post production we had to re-film the running scene as we thought we needed more shot variety, we had not planned this meant us needing to ask the actors unexpectedly, due to this we had to wait till the actors were available as some went on holiday as they thought we had finished filming. Overall i believe

Recommendation for Future Task

This project has most definitely allowed me to improve many ways for future tasks as i know that it can be very difficult to find mistakes in your own work. One key factor from this project i have learnt is that pre-production work is the most important as that is the basis of the film, also this was the very first time when we had used the screen play, this is where you write the dialogue of each character in the film, this has helped me and my partner a lot because it saved us a lot of time during production as in previous project we used to make the dialogue as we went during the production, also it allowed us to give it to our actors before hand so they know there lines and they can understand what happens in the film, this gives them greater detail about the content.

Another recommendation i would make is that it is really important to believe in the idea, as in previous project i never have gave the effort in the idea but for this project i really visualised and there were elements which me and my partner could relate to this made a lot more better as we could add factors to relate and make it more realistic for the target audience, for example smoking drugs is a real popular activity among the young youth this is why by having stoners it would relate to them and they could even see there self in the film.

Unit 4 Technical Evaluation

Technical and Aesthetic qualities

In our short film, we us use a variety of camera angle and shots to make it more interesting for the audience, camera angle and shots are the way which the short film has been recorded. An example of this using close ups at 1:46 and then we have long shot 2:28, this shows us using a range of shots to make it look very professional and it also makes it entertaining for the audience to watch, having a variety of camera angles and shot allows you to give detail to the audience which means the audience carry on watching the short film. I think we use the camera effectively as we use a lot variety of shots which makes our short film more enjoyable to watch, however i believe that we could have used different angles a lot more, by this i mean having high and low angle, this is why next time i will try my best to have more high and low angles as i think it makes the shot more unique.

Aesthetic qualities with the graphics would be that i wanted to have added graphics which matched the mood of the short film this is why for a teenage type font as it will appeal to them, i wanted to create my own graphics but due to the time i couldn't. An example of graphics would be at  0:04 when we see the graphics come as the beginning scene open, this has been due to me not having time to dedicate to graphics, i think that the finished product would have looked a lot better, overall i am pleased with the graphics we use within the quick time span we had.

Realisation of Proposal

Fitness for Purpose Audience

When pitching we had to have a target group which we were aiming at, the age range we aiming at was 16-24, gender was both female and male, interest we thought they would be interested in grime music and drugs etc, location we aiming towards was the East London as another part of our genre was British realism and the ethnicity was all as we weren't aiming towards specific ethnicity. That was our target audience when pitching our idea to the target audience, but i think it has changed during production because of the level of comedy which we had in our short film, for example we had 0:59 when we see the character laugh as the other character gets the tampon out, this may be sensitive to the female audience, this meant that our short film not really appealing to the both gender.

Also from the feedback from target audience we got both positive and negative feedback, but overall they were impressed, from the feedback most of them though that we should have shown more of the chase scene with the dog, due to the fact that we had to control an animal it was difficult as they couldn't really listen to the instruction, we even tried giving treats but it was still agitated, this was downside having an animal in the film. Also i feel as if the audience who watched the film was the right age group but there interest was different to our target audience that was the stoners, this is why they had a different opinions. How effecitve it was to our target audience is that the teacher said 'it may not appeal to everyone' this is what we agreed on as it did deal with sensitive issues but he thought we showed the lifestyle of a stoner well as he liked how they moved on without caring.

Fitness for Purpose Client

Production Log 4

This is the last week of the post-production as we are now coming to an end, this week has been very productive as we done a lot of work in a small time period, this has allowed us to complete our whole short film. As I said last week our aim for this week was to complete the shots which we had left and then edit it. The editing was really good as i could see the vision which the director had this allowed me to get their vision across more better, also we added effects to show the feeling the characters were going through, me and my partner were really impressed with the short film as it is what we wanted to portray.  Also as me and my partner added the new music to the film, it has impacted the final product of our film as it suits the atmosphere and genre which we are going for, this means our target audience will enjoy it more. We also exported the short film and uploaded it on YouTube for the public to see.

This week we faced one challenge as time was against us due to the deadline of the editing being end of this week, however me and my partner stayed outside of lesson time to complete the short film up to the high standard.Having a week left to complete the editing and filming the last few shots was very stressful  as we know it would be hard to meet deadline, but by being dedicated and motivated it helped us a lot as we got the work done to a high standard by the end of the work.

As this is the last week and we have now completed the short film there will be no more targets as we have meet our targets. The last thing which we have to do is just check the work and then evaluate what we done well and not, also there would be set of questions which we need to answer, this will allow us to think why we made certain decisions was it for better or worse.

The performance of our the actors has been amazing, this has been reflected in the film, also the dedication which they had to help us film the short film was excellent as they also were prompt to work and they went out of their way to come at times even if they had other priories, even when we had to re film shots and they even helped with gave tips filming some shots as they were acting so they had a better perspective. Most of the dialogue and actions were improvised due to them finding it making more sense and it also add a natural and realisation. Also the effort of the director has not gone unrecgonised as they had to director the whole film and they had to explain to the editor they way which they wanted the short film to look, also it was very important as the director had the idea in the head which mean them being the most important person as they were the person who had the imagery, without them there is no short film. The time and effort put into editing overall has been worth it as me and my partner are proud of this film as it is a great stoner film to watch with your friends and appeals to our target audience which the youth, this appeals to them as there are many young people who smoke marijuana.

No contingencies needed this work because everything which we needed was there already and we only just had to few things needed for the film. Having to use no contingencies allowed us to further with our editing and finish it on time as we didn't need to rely on anyone, me and my partner could just carry on editing without any problem.  This definitely speed the process up and we could finish the film up to high standard. Overall with the final product i am very happy as personally i believe that i have given everything which i had into this project and it should be reflected by the grade which i receive for this product.

Production Log 3

This week was just hardcore editing which mean that are main objective was to just get all the footage together, we will try our best to finish this week hopefully, but we cannot say for sure due to the amount of work left. We need to go out and get more establishing shots to show the scenery, we have a rough edit now but we are trying to get the new footage and just edit.

The challenge which we faced this week was managing time due to the fact we had exams and also had to revise for them which meant our focus being elsewhere, this meant us needing to speed up the process of filming the remainder shots. However, me and my partner planned the week according to the time we had  left. This meant giving a certain amount of time to filming and a certain amount of time to editing the film. Our teacher had decided to give us a extra time due to them being busy and not having the time to check our work, this meant us having a change of deadline  We still have a little more to do, so I can't say that we are completely finished so the extension benefited us in many ways. Another challenge we faced was the fact that we had forgotten a memory card on the day of re-filming this meant us not being able to film, however we were very lucky as one of our friends had a memory card which we could use and then upload it and give it back to the.

Next week we have slight work to do, me and my partner plan to finish after adding the effect and filters, this will make it look a lot more better.  The performance and effort from the actors has been amazing so far, this is reflected in the footage we saw while editing Both actors have shown a lot of effort towards the film, this has allowed us to create a high standard short film, also the effort has been show as they have agreed to coming out again to re-shoot specific shots
. Also the director has really shown his leadership due to the fact that he has been telling me what to do while editing and explaining how he wants the editing at times.

This week as contingencies we had a day where we could decide how to use it, by this i mean we either edited or went out to re-shot more, this benefited us a lot as we did use the day just to re-shot a few establishing shot and then we even edited on the same day, this shows us the productivity. As we have another week we have decided to spread it out due to the extra time, this will help to quality control and make sure it is up to the best standard possible

Production Log 2

This is the first week which we have began in post-production, we began editing all the footage which we got last week. We used Final Cut X to edit the short film. Present day we have edited the beginning of the film which should begin the climate of the story. We have been following the shooting script as that is the plan which we thought out each shot, this is why the shooting script was very important as it allowed to make a clear narrative in the short film. Me and my partner have looked at music which we possibly could use the brief states we need to get copyright free music or pay for the copyright, we have been lucky as we have found couple of instrumentals that we will be using in our short film. We had to download the music to the Imacs and then upload to final cut x. When editing me and my partner have decided to add effects like the letter box effect and blur effect. We also plan to add distortions like trails to show the drug feel.

There was many challenges that we faced this week was that we couldn't find suitable music which is copyright free and has the same feel as the movie. Also we were using the school internet which meant limited access due to privacy issues, this meant us needing to look whilst at home and deciding if it was right, as it we could only use copyright free music we had to make sure it clearly said it was copyright free or will not be able to enter the competition. However after searching in depth we came across the perfect songs for the film, which was copy right free. Another challenge was actually downloading the music as we couldn't find any websites in school that will allow us, we were very stress over this matter, but then me and my partner decided will wait till we get home and then we may have more online downloading websites option, the next day we got the music as we downloaded at home using a different website, by downloading different types of music we could play around with it.

Next week we plan to re film couple of shots we think need changing and also me and my partner as a team have decided that we need more shots of the dog at the chase scene, this is why next week we will film couple of shots and then we would need to upload and edit. The director suggested that there could be more done to it. For example, when both characters are running, he has decided to include a low angle shot pointed at the faces of the characters as they both run. Also he felt that there was not enough detail put into what happens to Fred after we see him turn in to the estate. I think more should be shown of his journey.

I think the director has helped me a lot as i could always ask questions if i was stuck no matter what. His vision was clear with no confusion, this is the reason why i have been able to put all the clips together. I think that he has allowed me to vision his idea and then put it to screen. As the editor of the film i have tried my ultimate best to add every detail which the director has told me to as it is the vision which i am trying to get across.

Contingencies that we had this week was that when editing the music we originally thought of having grime music through out the film, but then we realised it didn't suit the genre which we going for, this was comedy. However analysing the genre and style of the film me and my partner decided that it would only be right to go with something which was upbeat and matched the atmosphere of the film. Also as we are making a stoner film we thought it would be best to include stoner music that matched the action, we added music that had dialogue during the montage as it made it more humorous for the audience to watch, this would meet the brief as we are showing the clear genre of comedy as the audience will laugh.

Production Log 1

This week is the first week in production, we have managed to start the actual filming of our short film about two stoners who go on a journey when they intoxicated with drugs, this a comedy and we events which the target audience can relate to. As the week past we managed to do a lot of filming as on the days which me and my partner, we had enough time to complete the filming which needed to be, i can happily say that we have around 5% of filming left this will easily be done by beginning of next, by having the majority of the filming done we could get on with the editing which means having time on our hands to film any other shots that we really did not like.

Challenges which we faced during production was that that one of the leading actors broke his ankle, which meant him not coming as we needed someone who could run as we had a intense running scene, this meant us having to look for a new actor immediately.  This was a big issue due to the fact that no one was available or prepared for acting and most of our friends were revising for the exam which were more important to them. However we overcame this situation by asking a friend if they could be in it or they know someone who could be in it, luckily our friend know someone who would act in our short film, we then contacted them and arranged a date, we had to slightly change the schedule but it didn't really matter as we still could film it by the end of production date.

Next week we hope to start uploading the footage on to the Imacs and then edit it using the final cut x software. The is to put the all the scenes in following the script and also go through each clip as we re-done the some shots, we then need to make a firm decision on which clip to keep, these are tough decision which the editor and director need to make together. While we edit, we also need to filming the remainder of our film, this will be done on the first day next week.

Before production stage we all gathered together gone over the shot list and what the main purpose of the day was and clearly making sure that the characters had to do.  To make sure that our actors are confident for filming, we printed them off a script to make sure they get to know the script. Before we even filmed we told them the plot of the short film, that allowed them to know what the whole short film was about and what it was going to portray,
The cast and crew’s performance on the day was overall excellent as they got straight down to it, even though the weather was changing every hour, also we appreciated the fact that they were patient with us as we had to re-record some shots as they weren't right. I think the performance of the actors was best of their abilities, this is portrayed in the final product as the actors followed all the dialogue and followed actions which were stated. The crew was also great as they never interrupted the recordings and all the shots were right as the director wanted.

The location contingencies and planned locations were not used as we found a better location to film during the production, this allowed us to make it look a lot more appealing to the target audience which is 16-24. The contingency that we had for the actors were Patrick and Lucas. From the two we used Patrick as our original actor broke his ankle which meant him not being able to participate as our short film consists of a chase.

After we finished recording majority of the film we reviewed it and we were amazed by the shots that we had captured in some of the scenes which we had recorded, but however one of the scenes that we had filmed was not in the right lighting or frame, we then consulted with the director and decided that we came to an agreement of not including the shot at all in the film, this meant us not sticking to the original plan.

Job Roles and Responsibilities

Camera Operator- Mohammed Hussain

Responsibilities:
  • Need to film all the shots on the script
  • Communicate well with the director to get their vision across
  • To take care and interest of the camera
Mohammed Hussain will be appropriate for the job role due to the fact that he has been using a camera from a young age and also has been doing media for the past four years as he started media from GCSE and then continued it to A-level, this shows us the enthusiasm he has for media and also he has experience in using the cameras from past production, he was even a camera operator for a live multi camera show.

Editor- Mohammed Hussain

Responsibilities
  • Cutting the footage and then placing on to a timeline
  • Following the script to get the vision which the director wanted
  • Making justified changes to the editing
  • Working long hours to complete the short film

We have choose Mohammed Hussain to be the editor as we have seen his work from the past and he also believes that he knows how to use the software called Final Cut X up to a high standard, this means that it will be easier for him to edit. Mohammed knows how add effects and mix the sound this will be a key part in the short film as you need to make sure the sound and effect matches the emotion you want to send across.

Director- Asad Alom

Responsibilities
  • Having a vision on how they want the short film
  • Working closely with the camera man to get their vision across
  • Dictate the cast and crew on what they have to do
Asad is the person who has come up with this idea and has the vision of it, this means that it will only be right if he director as he will have the vision and then he would be able to get his vision across how he wants. Asad has also previously been a director in many projects for example he directed a advert which was done up to a high standard and achieved the best grade possible. Asad is really enthusiastic about this concept of the film and has a great vision, he believes all he needs to do is just record it now.

Production Manager- Asad Alom

Responsibilities
  • Have to make sure the cast and crew are at the right place at the right time
  • Ensuring all the props will be on set
  • Making sure that all locations are available to film in
  • Controlling the people on the set
  • Making sure the set is safe

Asad will be appropriate for this role as he has great leadership skills which will be an asset because as an production manager you need to make sure that you manage people and then multi tasking as you need to make sure there is no hazard that can cause accidents for example wires which a loose on the floor. Also Asad knows all the cast and crew so it would be easy for him to contact them and confirm timing and dates, this will be very convenient as they can contact each other if there is any issues.

Reflection on Final Content

Are there any areas of the presentation you would like to give any more detail on?

One area that I think we should have gone in to depth with our presentation was explaining the plot of our film. I don't think the idea was clearly explained and this lead to many questions being asked at the end of our pitch. However, due to the fact that we took questions at the end of our pitch, it allowed us to explain the parts that the audience didn't understand better.  I think the reason behind us not being able to explain the idea in depth at first was partly to do the with the fact that we were nervous, however our nerves settled as we went along the powerpoint.
What did your audience identify as the strengths of you short film idea?
A strength that the audience identified as part of our short film was bringing the genre of comedy forward. At the end of the pitch me and my partner asked the audience if they think we have come up with a good way to bring the genre forward. They replied by saying that having two characters in the story line and the story line itself does support the genre.

What did your audience identify as areas for improvement?

Our audience identified our props as an area for improvement. This is because we said that we were going to use fake marijuana. This led to the viewers saying that it could be a risk having drugs in our short film as it will be filmed in a park where police patroling regularly.

What changes will you make to your short film concept based on the feedback you received?

The changes that I will be making to my concept is just one which is at the beginning of the film. Originally, I planned for the dog to be seen walking with its owner. However, now I have decided that the dog will be a surprise element as I think it will make the film funnier for the viewers.
