Unit 5 Production Management Evaluation

Constraint experienced:

Legal

Legal rights are laws which have been but in place in the media industry to make both parties do not out law each other How my short film keeps to the legal requirements in the media industry, we made sure it does not contain any copyright music as this then would mean that we won't be able to upload to YouTube, the overall effect that the non-copyright music has on the short film is that it can be shared on different platform. The effect that this had gave on the short film was that we gave it music that had fitted the short film and it created the right atmosphere especially at 1:39 when we hear the lyrics matching the action as it speaks about drug, without the music it makes it very dual and it wouldn't get the audience in a mood which we wanted, the purpose of the short film was to make the audience smile and laugh, i think music played a big part in this.

Although we tried our best to keep with the legal issues, it was very difficult as when we were doing breaking performers rights as we did not take in waviers which can be used as a legal paper to confirm that they agree to act in the short film, which means it can be used later if there is a disagreement, this legal document can be used in court as proof if the actor disagrees. Another legal factor we broke was that we were harming under 18 as one of the character called 'jay' was smoking, this means harming their health, in the future we should try and look for character that are over the age of 18 because if they are under the age of 18 you are responsible in many different ways,

Regulatory

Regulatory is issues such do with classification, by this i mean that what age is the short film most suitable for, as you can see i think our short film is would be classified as a 15 above film, due to the following points, we have strong language such as swear words like ' fuck you' and 'piss off', these language are strong but it states that  'depending on the manner  in which it is used' this tells us that really depends which they way that they have said it, in our short film it is all comedy with the two friends and is not said in a serious tone, this is why it will be classed as an 15. However different people will have different opinion about what age they think it is classified as i believe that the film does touch upon 18 as the 18 requirement is that there is 'illegal drug use', in our short film we have two 17-18 year old who are acting in it and then we see them take drugs which is illegal this is why our short film i believe is 15/18 as there are content from both it contained but more aimed towards the 15 rated as there are more guidelines which it meets.

Financial

Financially we didn't really have a budget we could spend, we had to improvise a lot of thing due to no big funding as we would need to pay our set as the location was near by and it was a public area which meant us not needing to pay when filming, also by the location being near meant no travel cost as the buses are free for us. This benefited as we could spend our money elsewhere for props. By having no financial funding allowed us to think a lot better as we used most elements which we already owned.

An area that I thought that we had overspent was the essential to make it look like the actors were rolling up a joint, overall it cost us around £15 including the tobacco and weed which we had in our short film, this was very expected but was essential in our short film as we needed to have it, in the future we will try to get funding, how finance had a effected on the short film was that we couldn't dream big as there was a limit due to the fact that we had no budget, this is why we always thought how much it would cost and props already which we already own, for example the mobile phone shown in the short film was ours which we had used this meant us not paying for this saved us a lot of money. Finance has a big impact, for not having a budget i believe that we did well as the short film has been executed well as it shows the lifestyle of the young teenagers.

Management:

Time Management

Time management for this project was overall very productive as we were working any possible time we had.  When we started the pre-production work we were really behind as we i was ill for most of the time but we got the work done as i worked from home, by doing this we managed to stay back on time. During production are time manage was perfect as we all were at the right place at the right time, this allowed us to record the whole of our short film in the time which we wanted to this meant us being able to edit when we needed to, this means us having enough to re-shoot any scenes or shots which we thought were not good enough.
Improvements regarding time management would be to make sure that while filming to make sure the shots that are recorded are the way which we wanted, although this is time consuming it is very beneficial as it will lead to you not wasting time when it comes to editing and then you find out that the footage cannot be used, this is why i believe checking footage while in production can save you time and this is what we learnt as a group. Also time management is a key factor to do with communication and leadership as these factors help you to be more efficient with time, this means having effective timings.

Leadership Skills

Leadership in this project was a very big factor  that was lead during this project was very important doesn't matter how small the groups are, what we thought was that the director had to play a big part in the leadership, as they had the vision in the head this meant them needing to explain how they want it and what each individual character should do. Me being the camera operator and editor it was very important that i had the right shot and to make sure that the characters were in frame or i would tell them where to go, so i can improve the shot, this is a form of leadership as you would be directing people where to go. Also when editing the director would take the lead as they would explain how they want the shot and the pace of editing, these instruction must be followed by the editor.

At the post production stage the leadership should the most as when i was editing the short film i liked the fact that the director took a lead and i could confirm changes or even if i had doubt about a shot from the script, when editing the director always took my opinion on board and this helped us create a final product which we both could submit. Leadership has had a big effect on our short film due to the fact that leadership means that people know what there meant be doing, A factor which we may improve would be the fact that not wasting time and arguing about a choice we should just try it out then make a decision.

Communication

Communication is the way which you stayed up to dated with your partner and actors. For us we mostly communicated to our actors via mobile phones as that was that quickest way we could find out if they had any issues or even ask if there avaliable as a pair we more spoke in person as we would see each other everyday, this helped us get more on the same page because if one of us didn't get something we could explain in more depth. When it came to the production days me and my partner made sure that we had a mobile number for the actors so we can contact, we did have a change of location but luckily we had the phone number so we could call them and let them know, both of our actors replied back and listened to are instruction. Phsyical communication was a lot better for us as we could explain in more detail if not sure and the actors communicated well as they would let us know straight away if the couldn't make it and then this will allow us to plan in advance or find an alternative. Overall i believe in my group there was no communication issues as a pair we made sure us and everyone was informed of any changes , this allowed us to create a high final product.

Meeting Requirements

Fitness for purpose client is whether the final product has turned out the way which the client wanted. We were set a brief which we had to follow the client mentioned that it will be entered for a competition at ' SCREENTEST 2018', this means that there being guidelines such as to make sure that we use copyright free music, this was very difficult as we needed to find the right music and also make sure it is copyright free, for example at 1:17 we have music, we had to ask permission before using it and this allowed us to make sure that it is copyright free. Another guideline from the client was that it had to be 5-10 mins long, our short film 5:08 , we just went over the minimum time this mean us meeting the fitness for purpose of the the client. Overall this shows us meeting the brief which means meeting the client expectation.

Achieving Agreed Outcome

Realisation of the proposal is how well we meet the brief and did we achieve to the best standard possible. When we begun we had to have pitch our idea to the client to see if our idea meet their expectation and the brief we also gained feedback about the idea and what we could improve. In the brief it mentioned that 'your submission must be clearly classifiable into a film genre' this means that the short film needs to show a clear genre which means that they can understand the genre from watching it. When pitching we clearly said that it would be a comedy genre, i believe we clearly portrayed that in our short film, for example at 0:58 when we see the character getting a tampon out of the pocket it makes the audience laugh as it is a unusual item for the men to carry, this is why it would be more humorous for the male gender audience. Overall this shows us meeting the brief as the genre is clearly conveyed in the whole of the short film.

Working to Agreed Timescales

Working to agreed timescale was achieved by our group as we always hit our target but at the end of the editing we faced a issues with the shots which we needed to re-film, this was very time consuming and left us to be editing for another week so instead of finishing on the 16th of June we finished by on the 23rd, by having this extra it did mean we didn't achieve it in the time scale, however i think a big factor was due to me and my partner having vital A-level exams which meant us needing to put our focus elsewhere at times. The extra week allowed us to agree the timescales with my partner this allowed us to have set time to come and edit.

Improvement to working to agreed timescale would be that during production we had a lot of times when the actors delayed the time due to them having unexpected duties, this meant are agreed timescales differing at times. Also during post production we had to re-film the running scene as we thought we needed more shot variety, we had not planned this meant us needing to ask the actors unexpectedly, due to this we had to wait till the actors were available as some went on holiday as they thought we had finished filming. Overall i believe

Recommendation for Future Task

This project has most definitely allowed me to improve many ways for future tasks as i know that it can be very difficult to find mistakes in your own work. One key factor from this project i have learnt is that pre-production work is the most important as that is the basis of the film, also this was the very first time when we had used the screen play, this is where you write the dialogue of each character in the film, this has helped me and my partner a lot because it saved us a lot of time during production as in previous project we used to make the dialogue as we went during the production, also it allowed us to give it to our actors before hand so they know there lines and they can understand what happens in the film, this gives them greater detail about the content.

Another recommendation i would make is that it is really important to believe in the idea, as in previous project i never have gave the effort in the idea but for this project i really visualised and there were elements which me and my partner could relate to this made a lot more better as we could add factors to relate and make it more realistic for the target audience, for example smoking drugs is a real popular activity among the young youth this is why by having stoners it would relate to them and they could even see there self in the film.

Unit 4 Technical Evaluation

Technical and Aesthetic qualities

In our short film, we us use a variety of camera angle and shots to make it more interesting for the audience, camera angle and shots are the way which the short film has been recorded. An example of this using close ups at 1:46 and then we have long shot 2:28, this shows us using a range of shots to make it look very professional and it also makes it entertaining for the audience to watch, having a variety of camera angles and shot allows you to give detail to the audience which means the audience carry on watching the short film. I think we use the camera effectively as we use a lot variety of shots which makes our short film more enjoyable to watch, however i believe that we could have used different angles a lot more, by this i mean having high and low angle, this is why next time i will try my best to have more high and low angles as i think it makes the shot more unique.

Aesthetic qualities with the graphics would be that i wanted to have added graphics which matched the mood of the short film this is why for a teenage type font as it will appeal to them, i wanted to create my own graphics but due to the time i couldn't. An example of graphics would be at  0:04 when we see the graphics come as the beginning scene open, this has been due to me not having time to dedicate to graphics, i think that the finished product would have looked a lot better, overall i am pleased with the graphics we use within the quick time span we had.

Realisation of Proposal

Fitness for Purpose Audience

When pitching we had to have a target group which we were aiming at, the age range we aiming at was 16-24, gender was both female and male, interest we thought they would be interested in grime music and drugs etc, location we aiming towards was the East London as another part of our genre was British realism and the ethnicity was all as we weren't aiming towards specific ethnicity. That was our target audience when pitching our idea to the target audience, but i think it has changed during production because of the level of comedy which we had in our short film, for example we had 0:59 when we see the character laugh as the other character gets the tampon out, this may be sensitive to the female audience, this meant that our short film not really appealing to the both gender.

Also from the feedback from target audience we got both positive and negative feedback, but overall they were impressed, from the feedback most of them though that we should have shown more of the chase scene with the dog, due to the fact that we had to control an animal it was difficult as they couldn't really listen to the instruction, we even tried giving treats but it was still agitated, this was downside having an animal in the film. Also i feel as if the audience who watched the film was the right age group but there interest was different to our target audience that was the stoners, this is why they had a different opinions. How effecitve it was to our target audience is that the teacher said 'it may not appeal to everyone' this is what we agreed on as it did deal with sensitive issues but he thought we showed the lifestyle of a stoner well as he liked how they moved on without caring.

Fitness for Purpose Client

Fitness for purpose client is whether the final product has turned out the way which the client wanted. We were set a brief which we had to follow the client mentioned that it will be entered for a competition at ' SCREENTEST 2018', this means that there being guidelines such as to make sure that we use copyright free music, this was very difficult as we needed to find the right music and also make sure it is copyright free, for example at 1:17 we have music, we had to ask permission before using it and this allowed us to make sure that it is copyright free. Overall this shows us meeting the brief which means meeting the client expectation.
