Duration
Duration is how long the film actually last, this is a convention which i have picked out from the above short film because the whole film lasts 8:41. This meets the short film duration time, because short films are up to only 35 minuets it does not matter if they are shorter than 35 min, however it does matter if they are over 35 min because it will not be classified as a short movie. By the director choosing to make the duration short it helps get the point to the audience as they do not have to build a story up before they can go to the main story, this means that the audience are likely to enjoy it more as it is less time consuming.
Budget
As you can see above budget is a big convention for this short film as they usually do not have any budget. Above is a screenshot which shows that the short film has been film an typical council estate at 1:27 . This tells us this film did not have much of a budget as they did not really have to spend money on the location, also we see that the actors clothing are very basic and everyday where was not specially bought for the production of short film. The direct makes it very clear that they did not have a budget as the estate is introduced at the beginning of the film. The impact this has on the audience is that it shows them in a sense it's real and that is how they're day to live is, this means the target audience may related by it and they will relate to it.
Characters
Characters is whoever is seen in the short film, in the above short film at 1:40 we see the three characters who are seen the most, overall they are about 4 characters. This tells us it's a short movie as it doesn't have that many characters and we do not get that much background information about the characters as short film are not that long. The director has used this convention effectively as they only show few characters, the impact this has on the audience is that it makes it a lot less complicated for the audience to understand.
Genre
The above short film shows us the genre very clearly as we see the director has added a lot of humor for example at 3:31 this tells us it is a comedy and obviously the location of the film tells us that it is a British social realism as it is filmed in a typical council estate. The director has effectively used this convention as it clearly shows the genre in the film, the impact on the audience is that it makes them laugh at the humor which is shown in the short film.
Twist
The above short film uses the convention of the Twist as we see the boys are waiting for their friend at 6.30 then we see the friend finally come out but he actually comes out just to say to them to wait longer this is a twist as the audience thought his finally ready. The director effectively shows this convention as we see it clearly in the story line of the short film and it makes the audience shocked and they re-think.
Sound
Sound is a convention which the money box uses as you can see their is no dialogue in the above short movie above at all, this tells the audience that this is a short movie. Also the sound is just a background music is very loud this tells us the dialogue is not important it's the action which tells us the story rather than any dialogue. The director has effectively shown it is a short film as we see their is no dialogue and this means that it is a short movie. This can have positive effect on the audience as they can understand the story more clearly, however some people may find it difficult to understand without any dialogue as they won't know what it is about.
Emotional
Emotional is a convention which has been used in the above short film, we see the actors action creates a frustrated emotion at 4.29 as we see the actor lose all the money which they had. This allows the audience can empathise with the actor because they can imagine what the actor is going through. The reason why the director has used this convention is because in short films it is difficult to show the emotion within that specific time limit this is why they show situation which the audience will be able to relate to.
Abstract creativity
Abstract creativity has been used in the above because at 0:20 we see a vending machine, not everyone would think that a film would be based on a vending machine. We see the vending machine plays a big part in this short film as it is what the story is based on, this makes this movie creative because in a normal film people will get bored as it will just be about that which makes it dragging. The director has used this convention effectively as the idea is surreal and the audience would not expect the content which has been produced this will keep the audiences attention.
Duration
Duration is another convention is used in the above short film as the short film only lasts around 4 min. A positive of this is that it allows the director to get to the point of the film straight this allows the audience to be more keen to watch the film. We see a lot of action within the small span of time which they have, that is the best things about short movies for example in this short film we see him go the machine then he finds out the machine gives double the money after that he goes and withdraws all the money from the bank to make extra make the double then we see he loses all the money. The director uses this convention clearly as we see the movie is under 35 min and the effect this has on the audience is that it makes it a lot more entertaining to watch as it goes straight into the point.
Characters
Characters used in this short film is only one this tells us that it is a short film, as longer films have more characters , by having less character it makes it less complicated for the audience, we see the one character turn up at 0:30 sec. We do not see more than one character, this is why the director has successfully used this convention, the effect this has on the audience is that it allows them to know that the story is based on that specific person.

In the above short film we see few characters which is a convention of short film because there are only 3-4 characters which we actually me, the main characters we meet is at 0:36 in the car when the story begins. The director has used this convention effectively as they have few character which tells the audience. The impact this has on the audience is that they will find it less complicated and they would know who the story revolves around.
Storyline
We see the above short film follows todorov theory as we see everything is alright at the beginning when the taxi driver picks up the passenger but as they go drive down at 0:50 they get attacked by masked gang then we see the taxi driver escape , then eventually we they run away from the baddies and then everything goes back to normal and its daylight again, The director has used this convention effectively as you can see because the story follows the theory exactly. The impact this has on the audience is that it gives the story a good flow and it's less confusing for the audience as most film follow the same theory.
Twist
Twist is the least thing which the audience think will happen, twists are a very good way to get the audience reaction. The short film above has a twist because at 5:38 we see the old actor laugh because he said he did not have any diamonds at the beginning but at the end when the taxi drivers asks the actor he laughs which indicates he did. The director uses this convention very effectively as the audience do not suspect that would be the case, this means that the audience would be shocked and they'll want to watch the whole movie.
Duration
Duration is another convention which we see in short films, for example the Ambush only lasts 7 min which is very short but we see a lot happen and the go straight to the point. The director has used this convention effectively as it is only 7 minuets long which means that it is categorised as an short movie. The impact this has on the audience is that the movie will go straight to the point and this means the audience getting entertained and not bored as movies tend to long it out by showing the past whereas short movie shows the specific part.
Genre
Genre is another convention which is used in short film, for example at 2:12 we see the car try to escape and they collide together, we also see guns appear in the short film at 0:50 this shows the genre effectively as you can tell one of its convention is action. The director uses this convention very effectively we can tell the drama from the short film easily , the impact this has on the audience is that they can understand the genre easily as it will be portrayed in the video.
